Chain Skipping Under Power: Is Your Cassette Already Worn Out?

A chain that skips specifically when you push hard, in one or two particular gears, is describing a very specific and diagnosable problem — and it's usually not what people assume first.

Everything's fine until the hill. You drop into your hardest gear, stand up to push through it, and right at the moment you need the most power, the chain briefly skips, once, twice, and catches again. It's unsettling, it happens in one or two specific gears, and jumping straight to "I need a new chain" skips past a diagnosis that's actually worth doing properly.

The most common cause: a worn cassette, sometimes with a mismatched chain

Skipping under load, isolated to specific gears rather than happening everywhere, is the classic signature of a cassette (or occasionally just one or two specific cogs on it) that's worn into a shape the chain doesn't mesh with cleanly under force.

This commonly happens when a chain has been ridden well past its healthy wear threshold and has already reshaped the cassette teeth, or when a new chain has been installed onto an already-worn cassette without checking cassette condition first. Either path ends at the same symptom, which is exactly why the diagnosis has to start with the chain, not the cassette.

Check chain wear first, with a gauge, not a guess

Before assuming the cassette itself needs replacing, measure the chain with a wear checker tool. A chain that's still healthy (under roughly 0.5% elongation) paired with skipping suggests the cassette wore down independently, possibly from a previous worn chain that's since been replaced; the new chain now doesn't match the reshaped cogs. A chain that's already worn past 0.75% strongly suggests it's been the source of the cassette's wear pattern too, and both likely need replacing together.

The visual cassette check: hooked teeth

Look at the cassette cogs from the side, particularly whichever specific cog corresponds to the gear where skipping happens most. Healthy teeth are roughly symmetrical; worn teeth develop a distinct hooked, "shark fin" shape leaning in one direction. If the skipping gear's specific cog shows this pattern clearly while others look healthier, that's strong confirmation the cassette, specifically that cog, is the source.

When it's not the cassette at all: indexing and cable tension

Skipping that happens across multiple gears somewhat unpredictably, rather than isolated to one or two specific cogs, and especially if it's accompanied by generally hesitant or imprecise shifting, points more toward a rear derailleur indexing issue or stretched shifter cable than a physical cassette-chain mismatch.

A quick barrel adjuster correction test, small adjustments while pedaling and shifting, watching whether skipping improves, helps distinguish this from true worn-parts skipping, which won't respond to any amount of indexing adjustment. If nothing you do to the barrel adjuster changes anything, that's actually useful information: it points you back toward the chain and cassette.

A less common cause: a bent derailleur hanger

A bent hanger shifts the entire derailleur slightly out of its correct alignment plane, which can produce skipping or poor shifting concentrated in specific gears, often the extremes of the cassette range, that looks similar to a worn-cassette symptom at first glance. If a recent crash or hard hit preceded the skipping starting, check hanger alignment before assuming it's pure component wear.

What to actually do once you've isolated the cause

That's the mechanical side sorted. What you actually do next depends entirely on which of those causes you landed on.

Confirmed worn chain and cassette together: replace both as a set, and check chainring wear too while you're in there, since badly worn cassettes sometimes come with matching chainring wear. Confirmed indexing issue with healthy components: a cable tension adjustment, possibly combined with fresh cable and housing if it's been years since the last replacement. Confirmed bent hanger: replace the hanger, a cheap, sacrificial part by design, rather than attempting to permanently straighten one that's already bent once.

Can a brand new chain on an old cassette cause skipping even if the cassette isn't visibly worn?

It's less common but possible, particularly with cassettes that have seen a lot of mileage even without dramatic visible hooking. A very slight wear pattern that isn't obviously visible can still be enough of a mismatch for a brand-new, tightly toleranced chain to skip against.

If a new chain skips immediately after installation with no other explanation, cassette replacement alongside it is a reasonable next step even without dramatic visual wear.

Is chain skipping under power dangerous, or just annoying?

It's primarily an annoyance and a performance issue rather than an immediate safety concern in most situations, but a sudden skip while standing and sprinting or climbing hard can cause a loss of balance or an awkward, sudden movement, particularly in traffic or technical terrain. Should I replace the chainrings too if the chain and cassette both need replacing?

Check chainring teeth for the same hooked wear pattern before deciding.
