The Tablespoon Trick for a Perfectly Comfortable Helmet
Every helmet fits a little differently, and pressure points don't show up until you've been riding for an hour. Here's the low-tech fix — a regular kitchen spoon — that lets you reshape the foam liner to your actual head.
Cycling comfort is full of small, unglamorous fixes that nobody teaches you — they get passed around at group rides or buried three pages deep in a forum thread. Helmet fit is one of them. You can spend real money on a helmet in the right size and still feel a hot spot pressing into your temple by the second hour of a ride.
That's because size charts only account for head circumference. They say nothing about the actual shape of your head — how round or oval it is, where your forehead slopes, how your temples sit. Two riders with an identical circumference can end up with completely different pressure points in the exact same helmet.
There's a low-tech fix for this that keeps showing up in cycling forums and bike-fitter tips: reshaping the foam liner from the inside with the back of a spoon. It sounds almost too simple to work, but it follows directly from how helmets are actually built.
What's Actually Inside a Helmet
Under the soft fabric padding you can peel off and wash, almost every helmet has a shell of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam — the same rigid white foam used in packaging, molded into a head shape. This EPS layer is what determines fit, and far more importantly, it's what absorbs impact energy in a crash. The fabric pads on top exist mainly for sweat and short-term comfort; they don't do much for actual fit.
Because EPS is molded at the factory to a generic head shape, it's never a perfect match for any one specific head. Manufacturers build in a bit of extra room on purpose, precisely so there's room to fine-tune it — and that margin is what this trick uses.
Finding Your Pressure Points First
Before touching anything, put the helmet on exactly as you'd wear it while riding — buckled, level, straps set — and give it a minute or two. Pressure points often don't show up immediately; they build as the foam slowly compresses your skin, so a five-second try-on in a shop can easily miss them.
Use small pieces of tape on the outside of the shell to mark exactly where you feel pressure or rubbing. Be precise about the spot rather than marking a general area — you'll only be adjusting the foam directly underneath those marks.
The Spoon Trick
Take the helmet off and remove the fabric pads from the inside — most clip out via small plastic tabs or Velcro dots. While they're out, it's also a good moment to give them a wash, since sweat-soaked pads are a comfort problem in their own right.
With the pads removed, you'll see the bare EPS foam underneath. Using the rounded back of a regular tablespoon — or its curved edge for tighter spots — gently press and rub into the foam at each marked point from the inside. The goal is to slightly compress the surface of the foam, not gouge material out of it.
Work in small passes: press a little, put the pads back in, try the helmet on, then take it off and press a bit more if needed. Don't try to fix everything in one sitting. Foam compresses far more easily than it un-compresses, so it's much safer to remove a millimeter too little than a millimeter too much.
Where to Be Careful
This trick only works on comfort, and it has a real limit: EPS foam is a safety component, not just a shaping layer. Removing too much material in one spot can leave a thin patch that won't absorb an impact the way the rest of the shell does. Stick to small, gradual adjustments at genuine pressure points, and stop working a spot once it starts to feel noticeably thin or flexes under your thumb.
This also isn't a fix for a helmet that's simply the wrong size. If you'd need to remove a full pad's worth of foam to get a snug fit, or the helmet still rocks front-to-back with all its pads in, the shell itself is too big — no amount of internal reshaping will fix that.
One rule doesn't change regardless of how well-fitted a helmet is: retire it after any real impact. EPS foam is single-use by design — it protects you once by permanently crushing, and after that, fit is irrelevant.
Worth Trying Before You Buy Blind
Minor pressure points are common enough that they shouldn't be a dealbreaker on their own, and knowing you can nudge the fit afterward takes some of the risk out of ordering a helmet online instead of trying on every option in a shop. It won't turn a helmet with the wrong overall shape into a perfect match, but for the usual one or two hot spots, it's often the difference between a helmet you dread putting on and one you forget you're wearing.
